ST1 & ST2 Overview

Hospital Training Posts

The first two years of GP training are the ST1 and ST2 grades.  All trainees will spend 6 months of the first two years in General Practice (usually in the practice which will be their training practice as an ST3) and the remaining posts will be hospital or community based in a specialty relevant to General Practice.  Each post in the ST1/ST2 years is 6 months long.  Currently we have the following specialties include din our ST1/ST2 rotations: Psychiatry, Paediatrics, O&G, MAU, Oncology, ENT, Palliative Care, A&E, Ophthalmology, Elderly Care, and an innovative elective placement where trainees can arrange their own placements depending on their educational needs (recent examples have included Dermatology, Rheumatology and Family Planning).  During each ST1 and ST2 post trainees will have a Clinical Supervisor (usually their supervising consultant) to help direct their learning and complete the necessary assessments.

We monitor ST1/ST2 posts regularly by way of formal questionnaires and informal verbal feedback.  Trainees' answers to these questions help us to develop and adapt the posts as necessary.

Training Practice

All ST1s and ST2s are also allocated to a Training Practice and GP Trainer at the start of their GP training.  Their GP Trainer will also be their Educational Supervisor (different from the Clinical Supervisor) throughout their GP training.  Trainees are required to meet up with their Trainer on a regular basis to review the progress of their training.  Trainers also review the online ePortfolio of their trainees so that they can ensure all the necessary assesssment are completed each year and so that they can help the trainee get the most out of their ST1/2 posts.  Most ST1/2 trainees will spend their 6 month GP post during their ST1/2 years n their ST3 training practice.

Education

ST1s and ST2s meet on the third Wednesday of every month for one whole day of protected GP orientated education.  The sessions are organised and run by the Programme Directors (PDs) and cover a variety of areas including clinical topics, communication skills and career development.  The PDs are also on hand to offer specific support, career guidance and mentorship.  Three time a year the ST1/2 education is combined with the ST3 day release course so that trainees can share their experiences across the different years of training.

In addition to the monthly teaching there is also an annual GP ST conference.  This gives Trainees the chance to meet other GP trainees in Wessex and discuss GP training with members of the Wessex Deanery.

*The Ambulance Service require you to fill in an application form for observation shifts, and the shift would need to be booked a month or so in advance. You can obtain the application form from Simon Tricker or Hilary Barnes.

I have contacted all of the people above and they have agreed to be contacted by you, if you want to spend some time with them. These are only a few ideas and after discussion with your trainer you may feel you’d prefer to spend some of the time with other organisations/people. The important thing is that you do need to do the equivalent of one ‘OOH’ session per month when you are in GP as an ST1/2 and this cannot be with the OOH service as all of their training sessions are used for ST3. These sessions don’t have to be outside normal working hours, so you could use your study half day to do some of them. You will be expected to record the sessions you do in your e-portfolio.

Most of these organizations will require some notice to arrange a mutually convenient time so it’s probably best to make the arrangements early in your GP post.

I will review your e-portfolio entries, but if you have any other feedback on any of the sessions you do, or if you arrange a different session which might be useful for other trainees – please do let me know.
