Why General Practice?
General Practice recruitment takes place through a national system. For more information on a career in General Practice and the application process, see the GP Recruitment website - www.gprecruitment.org.uk
Why Portsmouth?
The Portsmouth and Isle of Wight VTS and the Wessex Deanery are at the forefront of developing new initiatives in GP training.
We were one of the first GP training schemes to respond to the criticism that the initial 2 years of GP training had very little contact with primary care. We have worked hard to develop a more integrated GP orientated approach, with greater links between ST1s and ST2s, and primary care. All ST1s and ST2s are allocated to a GP Trainer and Training Practice, and regular contact is encouraged throughout the scheme. All schemes now spend 18 months in their GP training practice. This contact allows for support, guidance and help with planning appropriate learning objectives. We have worked with Hospital Consultants to develop our VTS posts and ensure relevance to General Practice with a community orientation. We have also been able to develop new Community Based Posts. These are monitored and reviewed on a regular basis.
Our work successfully modernising our GP training scheme has led us to receiving the Health Service Journal Award for Training in November 2001 and Portsmouth itself has been recognised through the award of the prestigious Teaching PCT status in January 2004.
