The nMRCGP consists of:

The official website can be found here and gives a full description of the examinations.  THe dates for the assessment can be found there.  Resources for revision are also there.

The AKT is a factual test.  Broad reading and experience forms a sound basis, and it is important to look at the RCGP guidance and feedback on past reports and examinations.  They often detail areas it is profitable to focus revision on, including statistics, knowledge of NICE and SIGN guidelines needed, and the Oxford Handbook of General Practice covers a lot of knowledge.

Going on a course for the AKT is a pre requisite, and is something a Trainer can advise and support.  Dr Mark Coombe, a local trainer and RCGP examiner runs a proven course for the AKT.  Details are available from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  The Deanery fund part of the course as follows:

AKT (ST2/ST3) Cost £165 - Deanery fund £150
CSA (ST3 only) Cost £495 - Deanery fund £300

Several books exist on the AKT, and your GPR may choose one that you can fund for the Practice Library.   "Google" will give several websites for the AKT.

The Trainer's rle here is to advise and support.  It would make sense for the GPR to take the AKT early if possible, and so leave space in the crowded ST3 year.

The CSA is often the most intimidating part of the nMRCGP for GPRs, testing clinical and consulting skills under pressure.  As a Trainer it makes sense to demistify the examination, giving a clear understanding of the mechanism of the examination.  You may well want to sit in on a local CCSA course as an observer - details available from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  This will help appreciation of the examination mind set, and so allow you to structure your teaching within the exams domains.  A GPR needs to go on a CSA course.

Forming a study group is a big help for many, and often happens informally on the Day Release Course (DRC).  Our DRC has two CSA Examiners as Course Organisers, and emphasises the examination in its teaching.  We have other CSA examiners locally, and can put you in touch as needed.  Each Trainer Group has a Course Organiser and CSA Examiner within it.

As a Trainer it helps to emphasise the practical details of the examination, as GPRs sometimes underestimate the journey to Croydon and the ensuing experience!  Orientation days areavailable from the CSA and a 'dummy run' at Croydon can be a wise investment of the GPR's time.

The WPBA is often underestimated by the GPRs, but is essential for passing ARCP reviews, and the RCGP Certification Unit.

It is important as the Trainer to support the GPR in appreciating the need for regular quality entries, emphasising reflective practice.  Click here for Sue Crane's Reflections on ePortfolio Log.  Curriculum coverage is another important area, and 'The Condensed Curriculum Guide' by Riley (ISBN 9780850843163) is a help to steering the leading.

As Trainer it is important to have a clear grasp of the evidence needed at each stage of the ST years and a guide is available at NESC - GP Resources & Information - Trainers.  Assessment during your training.

Our Trainers are also Educational Supervisors, and a Guide to this role is here.  Please put as much information as possible in the review for the ARCP panel.
