Lake Road Practice
Dr James Hogan
James Hogan
Jim was himself a registrar at Lake Rd and now he's one of the trainers. He is particularly interested in eyes and clinical governance and is clinical governance lead for the PCT. He was behind setting up TARGET, the successful multi-professional education half days for all practices in Portsmouth PCT. He regularly teaches on the day release course on PMS.
Dr Geoffrey Robinson
Geoff Robinson
Geoffrey Robinson has been a Trainer since 1986.  All of his Registrars have passed the MRCGP, and several are in practice locally.  His approach to training is based closely upon the Registrar's experiences and problem solving, rather than a rigid curriculum. This flexible approach gives close support to the Registrar as they learn. He has published jointly with his Registrars in the British Journal of General Practice, and his successful teaching promotes professional development by utilising psychometrics together with learning, decision making, and conflict style theory.  His PhD reflects this interest.

In the past he has been a Course Organiser and is now an Associate Dean leading on trainer development.  He teaches on the Day Release Course, is a Tutor for the Deanery's Prospective Course and Experienced Trainers Course, and is a Fellow of the RCGP by assessment.
The Practice
The Practice is within the heart of Portsmouth and cares for 13,300+ patients from The Lake Road Health Centre.  In addition to being a long established Training Practice taking medical students and F2s, the eight partners have a wide range of interests and skills to support training. There is a full complement of staff, equipment and computers. The Doctors are supported by a large Practice nurse Team and a Nurse Practitioner.  Many services are based in the Centre, including the District Nursing team, Dentistry, Podiatry, Smoke Stop and Counselling.

The Registrar is part of this friendly team, and is encouraged to practice high quality medicine with an emphasis on continuity. The Centre has recently undergone a complete refurbishment.  Out of hours gives the opportunity for shared sessions with the Partners.  The Practice is close to St Mary's Hospital with it's large library and St James's Hospital where the Day Release Course is based.

The Partners run personal lists and have an in depth knowledge of their patients and their families.  In addition they have special interests in a wide variety of areas, including Dermatology, GU Medicine, Occupational Health, Eyes and Diabetes.  The Practice is at present undertaking the Quality Practice Award scheme from the RCGP.
Training at the Practice
The combination of experience in a busy practice and close support from the Trainers will provide a Registrar with the skills to cope and enjoy a career in primary care.

The Registrar is based in their own modern room close to their Trainer.  The Trainers are Educational Supervisors from the start of ST1, and take a close interest in Hospital learning.  GPRs are encouraged to develop quality in their clinical and consulting skills, before developing a consulting style to pass the CSA and do well in the future.  GPRs are involved in all aspects of the Practice.
