Dr David Raw
David started training in 1983. He was a Course Organiser for many years. Then he spent 5-6 years organising TARGET, a multi professional education programme for Primary Care in Portsmouth.
More recently he has concentrated on being a trainer for GP Registrars and Foundation Doctors. He is a Wessex Tutor and part of a group organising both education to GPs who want to become trainers, and also courses to support and develop GPs who are already experienced Trainers.
His fascination for Education Development spurred him to complete an MA in Education in Health Professionals.
He is married with 6 offspring, 3 of whom are teachers. He has 6 grandchildren about whom he can be (and frequently is) very boring. |

Dr Tony Tollast
Tony is now the active trainer in this long-standing training practice. His own particular interests include dermatology and he has worked as a clinical assistant in the local hospital. Tony is married to a nurse and has a fairly funky past. Indeed it is rumoured he had blue hair in his youth! He loves teaching and apart from a happy band of ex GPRs he is also involved in teaching nurse practitioners. |

The Practice
The practice has been involved with training since the 1960’s. The previous senior partner was Associate Director and was central in starting the Wessex Course for the Education of Trainers. Three partners at present were Registrars in the practice. There are also many local GPs who have been trained at Fratton Road. For years the practice was involved with undergraduate training at Southampton University at all levels. We have had experience with teaching PRHOs.
As well as this commitment to education a partner, Charles Lewis, was the Executive Chair for Portsmouth City PCT which is now a Teaching PCT of which there are at present only four in the country. |
Training at the Practice
A GPR at this surgery will receive 2 tutorials each week, one with the trainer Tony and one with David Raw in critical appraisal. With the impressive line up of partners this can truly be called a training practice with an educational ethos.
There is also protected GPR time with educational meeting central to TARGET and an amazing staff system which guarantees a good time
