PREMISES AND PATIENTS

Waterlooville Health Centre: The main site is rented from Portsmouth Healthcare Trust and was recently extended in 1999 to provide the practice with 5 consulting rooms (including a Triage room), Treatment room, Examination rooms and office space. All practice administration is done from the Health Centre.
Westbrook Surgery: The branch site (about 2 miles from main site) is a converted detached houseand is owned by the partners. It caters for a smaller population of approximately 2,600.
THE PRACTICE TEAM
As well as the Practice Manager, Mrs Karen Hillman MinstLM, there is a full compliment of reception, administration staff and nurses (22 in all including 4 Practice Nurses an assistant practice manager and a Health Care Assistant), most of who have been with the practice over 5 years. There are also attached staff - 2 District Nurses, 2 Health visitors, a Midwife a CPN, a Counsellor, and a Family support worker (mostly based at the Health Centre.)
We pride ourselves on our ability to talk to each other and work as a teamwith our community staff. We have PHCT meetings and work closely together, particularly in the care of terminally ill patients and families with young children where there are problems. We are also part of the national collaborative for Advanced Access and providing Advanced Access is one of our goals for the future.
NHS SERVICES
We offer Advanced access allowing all patients that so wish, access to a Health Care professional within 24 hours and to a GP within 48 hours, whilst still allowing those patients that want to the facility to pre-book an appointment or having a telephone consultation.
Practice services include:
Nurse Led Minor Illness Clinic, Chronic disease Management, Asthma Clinic, Diabetic Clinic , Healthy Heart' clinic (in line with Coronary Heart Disease NSF), Phlebotom, Minor Surgery, Cryosurgery, Well woman, Smoke-Stop clinic, Ante-Natal services, Child Immunisations.
In addition, Portsmouth Healthcare Trust operates a range of services from the Health Centre, such as: Family Planning Services, Health Visitor-run Baby clinics, Physiotherapy , Speech Therapy, Chiropody. Local consultants also hold regular clinics in Antenatal care, Psychiatry and Psycho geriatrics.
We are also working with the PCT to offer help and support for young people. In September a youth clinic will be introduced within the Health Centre, this will be managed by Taryn Samways - Teenage Pregnancy project worker.
NON- NHS WORK
The doctors have weekly appointment times to carry out employment medicals etc. as well as earning practice money from administrative duties such as PMA reports, benefit forms etc.
COMPUTERS
The practice is paperless and fully computerised (EMIS version 5), with PC's throughout the two surgeries. All clinical staff enter consultations directly onto the computer and work without notes. Hospital letters etc. are scanned into the computer and relevant clinical information read-coded into the patient's electronic record. We are fully linked with the Health authority for Registrations. The practice also has path-links with the local hospital so almost all diagnostic tests are entered directly into the clinical system.
