Dr Kieron Cooney joined the practice in 1995 having previously worked as a GP trainee in St Helens Practice. Trained at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and University College London he started medicine later on in his career after spending some years as Chief Science Officer for Cambridge Surgical Research Unit. He has a paediatric interest following a number of years working as a paediatric registrar in the 1990s.
Dr Cooney has been training since 1999 and has enjoyed the challenge and stimulation of at least 9 registrars so far.
He was a video examiner for the previous College exam and has now become a Senior CSA examiner for the nMRCGP.
His interests lie mainly in the playing of Scottish Highland Bagpipes and as anyone living on the Isle of Wight would know he is a skilled and proficient bagpiper often found to be out conducting various public performances

The Practice

St. Helens Medical Centre is a popular semi rural practice with a list size of around 6300, mostly elderly population but with the diversity of a very large number of temporary resident holiday makers appearing throughout the holiday season. It is situated in a beautiful part of the Isle of Wight close to beaches and sailing facilities. The area boasts good restaurants, cycling and walking with ease of access to the mainland via passenger ferries in Ryde and car ferry 15 minutes away. The practice is known for its friendly and interactive staff and has an informal atmosphere. It is long established as a training practice so staff and patients alike are familiar and happy with the concept of training.
The practice is a high achiever and proud to be the most cost effective prescribing practice on the Isle of Wight together with the achievement of 100% QOF points for the past 3 years.
The out of hours provider is the local PCT and allows a friendly team spirited approach to out of hours cover at the local hospital in Newport.

Training at the Practice

| The training is now based around the ePortfolio with all effort to achieve the nMRCGP. Training is now 18 months in post allowing plenty of time to enjoy the position and to gain experience and education in an informal and friendly environment with support not only from the trainer, but from the whole practice team. Facilities include a well stocked library, a video facility, laptop computer, digital camera for clinical photography and of course, the desktop access to online learning resources. |
