Dr Simon Giles MB BS MRCGP DRCOG DFFP

I trained at The Royal London Hospital and subsequently worked around London, on the South Coast and in Australia, completing my GP training in Chichester in 2000.  I have worked as a full time partner since.

As a practice we strive to provide high quality family medicine and are willing to adapt to whatever changes are thrown at us in Primary Care.  In the past I have enjoyed teaching medical students and will lead the practice in teaching GP registrars from August 2010.  I strongly believe in the benefits of good professional relationships, humour, sharing of problems and reflection in the teaching of General Practice.  I hope we can offer tomorrows GPs a fun, educational and exciting start to their careers.

I love life on the Island.  My wife grew up here and we have two young children, visiting family here made us appreciate the quality of life an Island like this can bring a family with its mixture of seaside, rural and village life.

In  my spare time I enjoy racing my Spring 15 catamaran, I am a qualified dinghy instructor and run courses teaching local children to sail.  I also enjoy off road motorcycling, skiing, hearing live music and socialising.
The Practice
Shanklin Medical Centre serves the population of a small thriving seaside and rural town on the South East coast of the Isle of Wight.

The practice serves a population of some 11,500 patients.  This number has grown slowly but steadily over the past 5 years.  There is a higher than average proportion of patients aged 65 and over, and an associated high prevalence of chronic medical problems.  The practice has responded to this with the development of a constantly evolving and well managed systematic approach to health care with an emphasis on involvement of all members of the 'team'.

We provide a service to a large number of holidaymakers during the summer months.

The practice is situated centrally in the town making access easy.  The building has recently undergone extensive works, giving us extra rooms and space.  The installation of a lift for disabled patients has allowed us to exploit the space upstairs to the full.  We believe that it is important to make the practice a pleasant environment for patients and staff alike.  To this end we have recently commissioned three local artists to produce some large pieces for the building.

The philosophy of the practice is simply to provide the highest possible standard of medical care to the practice population.
