Dr Dean Hatfull

I was a newly appointed trainer in 2006, but have been teaching undergraduates for several years. I enjoy the role of teaching and am enthusiastic to impart my experiences and knowledge, but also am looking forward to learning from my GPR. I trained in Southampton, London and Portsmouth initially in respiratory medicine, but after 2 years as a chest registrar jumped ship and have never looked back! If you enjoy practising good medicine and revel in an atmosphere of fun then you may be the Doc for us. |

I joined the practice in May 2006 and became a Trainer in April 2008. Within the Practice I am prescribing lead, do Minor Ops, fit coils, undertake child health surveillance, and have a declared interest in Women's Health! I have enjoyed teaching medical students for some years, and have had ambitions to become a trainer since completing my own training in 2001. I spent several years in hospital medicine in the UK and New Zealand before moving into General Practice. I love being a GP, and as a Practice we are enthusiastic about Training. I am the second Trainer in the Practice, and Dean I hope to offer a relaxed, trainee centred learning environment, where our objective for our trainees' year with us is not only to complete nMRCGP, but to enthuse trainees about General Practice, and facilitate the development of well rounded, happy, competent GPs. |

The Practice
|
|
The Practice has been in existence for almost 30 years and has operated from The Health Centre since 1974. This is situated in the centre of Fareham town with shopping and leisure facilities in close proximity. As well as our Practice, the Health Centre houses another Practice, Chiropody, Physiotherapy, Family Planning and Social Services. We are actively looking at cost neutral PFI new purpose built premises to suit our growing needs.
There are 7 partners plus 30, mostly part time staff, with great experience including excellent typists and secretaries. We have just over 15000 patients with a good balance across the age range and social strata. Two of the partners carry out the bulk of the minor surgery and another two the child heath surveillance clinics. We take pride in embracing new technologies. For example, we have purchased a cardiac monitor/memo for the diagnosis of arrhythmias that is already proving invaluable (and impressing local cardiologists!)
An integral part of our service involves the wide range of nurse led sessions including asthma, copd, diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, stress management, travellers WP, WW and smear clinics. Referral can be made directly to physio and counselling services that are based at the Health Centre.
Our Treatment Room is ‘manned’ throughout the day by trained nurses who are competent in a wide range of procedures. A midwife attends weekly. Our senior nurses undertake nurse triage 4 days a week.
We use a Microtest computer system, which we have had for about 8 years. We are scanning letters/reports into the computer and are certainly paper light if not paperless yet. Another recent innovation that has aided our practice has been the setting up of an internal practice intranet on our own server. Every terminal now has instant access to all the information that might be needed - examples include Q&O dynamic reports and progress, referral forms, information leaflets, teaching photographs taken by the partners with our digital camera, rotas, procedures….the list grows by the day!

Training at the Practice
|
|
An old training practice with new trainers but also others who teach medical students gives us a good grounding in education. I hope to use I.T. to good effect including digital editing of video consultations via the practice laptop. You will get your own room and I have an “intro package” that I can email if requested or send on floppy disk.
However, my take home message is simple - above all, you are here to learn and enjoy your time with us. Come and have a look.
