On being a locum Organisation There are a number of key pieces of information that are needed which are not always easy to access, so this is a basic guide to being a locum - it is not exhaustive and there may be errors. Appraisal
You have to have one of these a year. Allocation should be automatic from the Performers list - but if you haven't heard after a few months contact Gill Watson at the Wessex Deanery on 01962 718754. Locums can claim payment for appraisal. Self Employment You will need to register with the Inland Revenue as self employed. This is a requirement and you may be fined if you do not do this within the prescribed time period. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/ National Insurance You need to pay these too! The link is on the Inland Revenue webpage given above. Pensions You can continue in the NHS pension scheme as a locum (when doing NHS locums). The employer contributions are paid by the PCT you are on the performers list of. You will need locum forms A and B available on line, and you pay the employee contributions. There are time limits on submitting these forms - so do them regularly!
