The aim of the GP Retainer Scheme is to:
- enable Doctors to continue in General Practice
- maintain their skills and confidence
- have an educational input to become 'up to date' with their knowledge
It is for GPs who would be otherwise unable to find a suitable post. The purpose of the scheme is to support Doctors until they are able to return to General Practice as Principals or Non Principals. Educational supervision is provided to balance the need for educational support with clinical experience.
The scheme is usually up to 5 years for a maximum of 4 sessions a week.
The Deanery must first educationally approve the Practice and Retainee, and then monitor the post. The Retainee is employed by the Practice, with reimbursement in part available from the PCT.
It is very advisable to discuss proposals with the PCT before any arrangements are entered into.
GPs or Practices who are interested in the scheme should contact Geoff Robinson, Associate Dean, in the first instance (click here to email) for an informal discussion.
